Statement from Treasurer Summers:
Governor Rauner has consistently introduced unbalanced and heartless spending plans that have devastated the most vulnerable communities throughout Illinois. Today, nothing has changed. Under his watch, funding for vital social service programs is withering and the backlog of unpaid bills is growing. The Governor has failed to improve our state’s inequitable school funding formula – which only exacerbates issues facing underserved communities like gun violence and unemployment – because of an ideological obsession with dismantling teachers’ unions.
For the third year in a row, the Governor has failed to lead and provide a balanced budget for Illinois residents – he is proposing a budget that is $4.5 billion in the red. Our state’s financial struggles have been made worse by the Governor’s blind focus on non-budget related items that hurt working-class families and fail to make a meaningful dent in the state’s budget deficit. For someone who ran on a promise to lead, his main focus has been his own personal priorities, not the welfare of Illinois residents. We need to get our fiscal house in order and find creative ways to generate revenue to pay our bills. The time for learning on the job and broken promises is over. The people of Illinois deserve better.
